It’s taken me 57 years to do so, but I’ve finally visited John O’Groats. The motor is based on the one in the KTM 390 Duke. The 390 motor is a DOHC, 373cc single with a 6-speed gearbox and a 10,000 rpm redline. It’s said to produce about 42 horsepower. Less weight means more maneuverability and the 790 R tips the scales at a claimed 460 lb wet, ready to ride. That’s nearly 50 lb lighter than the 1090 Adventure R, with the 790’s 5.2-gallon tank giving the rider a claimed 280 miles of range before requiring a top-up. KTM engineers fine-tuned this engine to give it a powerband that's more suitable for a luxury-adventure tourer than a complete nutcase like the Super Duke R.
